hatch fasteners

I am building a Houdini sailing dinghy and have just made the hatches and was going to fit them with nylon hinges and cam action latches.

Are there any alternatives that I should consider? I am going to paint the interior of the dinghy ivory white so the nylon should blend in reasonably well, but I must admit to being slightly uneasy about using them.

Also what do you use to form a water tight seal around the hatch cover. I have posted some photos of the hatches on the build progress log to help with any ideas that people might have.

Re: hatch fasteners

Jason,

There are many ways to secure hatches and it sounds like you have a solution, or you could purchase some ready made hatches, but I favour your approach.

To make the seal you could try using the gasket seal we use on our kayak hatches.  It has a self adhesive side and it works well and would suit your purpose.  We can get it 6mm thick as well which may suit you better.

Hope this helps.
