Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Some pics of our latest progress. This is our first ever attempt at a 'canoe'. The informative instructions and plans have been very deatiled and helpful. Searching for the materials has been quite a task but we've got everything we need so far .... just need a few more warm days to try and get some more epoxy in place before we start removing the wires etc.

Sam welcome.  You click on the upload button on bottom right of the text box you write in.  You then click on 'browse' to find the file you want then upload.  When you are in the preview there's a load of file info which you can check on preview, then submit.

I'm no expert, but worth a go.

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

It is great to see this boat being built.  We have only recently started supplying these plans and are looking forward to your feedback.

How long has it taken so far?

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Ordered the plans the very end of august this year. So it's been weekends only....weather permitting ! The only inside job was marking out the 8x4 sheets, everything else has been patio !! Spent quite a bit of time scouring the Internet and forums for odd tips and sources of materials and supplies... Have stalled a bit at present because I don't think the temperature is going to allow much more epoxying, unless I get it moved into the garage ? All joints now glued to the extent that the copper wires have all been cut and removed where possible. Gunwales and inwales got delivered this week, so next job is a tempory fit up to see how these look. We've used 4mm, this is a slight deviation from standard as the first report we read about this kit was from a builder who,d used 3 mm ply for lightness. Thinking this was standard we opted for 4 mm, although we learnt that 5 and 6 mm are the recommended in the plans. Wittling and shaping a centre spreader and roughing out the seat frames and deck supports etc, plenty to do.

Thanks for for your interest, we'll keep you posted.

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Some progress...... received the gunwales and inwales (very nice PAR Douglas Fir) which has allowed us to progress with things. Tempory fitting of the gunwales has lead to completion of the bulkheads. These needed a bit of developing to ensure a good all round fit but with the gunwales in place, the clamps could be arranged to allow the epoxying. With the BH's in place we can now progress the front deck supports, inwales and inwale spacers. Weather was warm enough to allow the epoxy to go off !! Running out of clamps fast aswell.

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Have been cutting & trimming various bits & pieces. Have made and test fitted the deck supports & forward inwales etc. Started to trim the areas where the decks will sit along with the deck pieces also cut and trial fitted. Made some inwale spacers ready to glue to the inwales and a test fit of the inwales aswell. Too cold for epoxying outdoors, so need to move to the garage we think !

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Sam, good to see your boat progressing, it looks fantastic.  I love how you have done the gunnels.  Not only do they look good, but they can be used for all sorts of things once the boat is in operation like hanging dry bags from etc.

well done

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Some recent progress as the weather has been warm enough ... finally !  Some final checks for 'level' before some GRP tape & resin has gone on the inside to finally stiffen things up. The gunwales are now finally in place along with the deck supports for and aft in readiness for the decks. The inwales also have finally been fitted .... some more pics .....

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Some more progress, after the gunwales and inwales came the completion of the decks, which has all helped to rigidize things considerably ! The gunwales and inwales have all been semi finished and sanded and dressed. We have turned her over to start looking at the exterior joins on the hull. Lots of rubbing down and fettling but we are getting ready for some more epoxy and the glass cloth on the hull etc. The beauty and simplicity of this design is starting to show through, the plans and instructions give you enough information as to what you NEED to do but leave enough freedom for you to finish an detail as you desire... we're enjoying the process .....

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

We've turned our attention to finishing the HULL, the outside joins / chines have all been taped and epoxied and sanded and most of the Hull has had the additonal layer of glass cloth which has also now been epoxied in place. With hindsight, a three person job, as there is plenty of rollering and brushing required to get the cloth fully wetted and stuck down in places and thats after you've cut and shped the cloth to fit where you can. A few air bubbles had to be split and dressed in, but on the whole its smoothed things out alot and we're thinking about colours and paint...finally ! Some pics here.

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

The plans and ideas for the seats are pretty straight forward. We started out with something simple & flat but ended up with a curved seat that could take some extra pading if required. The two 'cross' bars will have an end pad fitted and this is what we intend to 'fix' to the inside faces of the Hull / bilge panel. The ply is still flexible, so some additional stiffening is going in with the epoxy / filler when we're ready to fit. The inside of the hull area has been fully sanded (again) in readiness for  a few extra pieces of the glass cloth. This does leave a smooth uniform finish, so this is how the inside will stay. We hope to complete this  and then fit the seats, when they're complete. Some pics here.

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

I like how you have done the seats.  Have you launched yet?  Be good to see you on the water if you have and get your verdict on the design.

From all the pictures it certainly looks like you have done it justice.  I hope you are pleased and proud with your work?

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Some latest progress, seats completed and strengthened with some epoxy and ready for varnish. The outside of the hull was given a final rub down and a skim over in epoxy prior to the first of the Blue Top Coats all rubbed down in between too. The inside of the hull has also had its final skim coat of epoxy and some minor 'bubble' repairs etc. Marked out for the seats using tape and remembering the old measurements the seats have been offered up, checked and now epoxied in place. The centre spreader has been finally epoxed in place aswell. Just the decks to re-varnish and a couple of coats of varnish for the gunwales and inwales aswell and thats about it.

Re: Eureka 155 - Canoe Build

Well its 'olympic' week... and that was the sister ship to the Titantic that didn't sink ....... so we had to launch !! Hoorah. All a bit new to us as we learn how to launch, come aboard, paddle, steer, stop and balance !  Seems to move forward very easily with little effort, tracking (left or right ?) is a bit sensitive but you have to concentrate .... or thats just our inexperience ?? Otherwise all is well. First launch was from a local stretch of the Nene from the river bank, not ideal but survived. Today we had a 3 mile round trip from a local slipway to town and back, raced the swans (lost) but got back safely ! Great fun so far..  pics attached.
