Fyne Boat Kits have teamed up with Grain Surfboards to offer the Homegrown kits for sale across the UK and Europe. The introductory offer runs from 1st to 31st March 2012.
There are 10 boards to choose from in this exciting range, and most of the boards come in different lengths.
Mike LaVecchia of Grain said he was, “So psyched this is happening. Surfing in the UK is huge right now and it's very exciting”.
The kits are made with a series of frames and keel around which the locally sourced wood with machined edges are wrapped to form the outer skin. This then gets covered in a woven glass fabric set in solvent free epoxy.
The wood is sustainably managed and harvested in the UK and is carefully picked and matched for each kit. The kits come with all the hardware required including fin boxes, leash cups and vents. Fins are not included. The building manual is 180 pages of diagrams, pictures and well set out steps that allow you to make a really great board that will last.

wicked boards Grain have very green ethos which most of us share how ecofriendly are the board kits you manufacture?

Hi Leggy,
Thanks for the question. Our kits are manufactured to the same exacting specification that the Grain kits are.
So, our plywood that forms the keel and frames, comes from wood from an ethically managed forest that has FSC and PEFC certification. It's important to know that our kids will get the opportunity to be able to build from wood in the future.
The rails and planking are from locally grown wood from well managed woodlands that have FSC certification, they are sustainable and have a short supply chain. All of this is important in keeping the carbon print down as low as possible.
The epoxy we use is from Professional Epoxy Coatings, and it is both solvent free and low to no in VOC emissions, so it's safe to use at home and as ecologically sound as it can be, whilst a 'proper' epoxy suitable of doing the job it needs to.
Because the boards are so strongly built, even before 'glassing, by the time the 'glass is on, we aim for them to last a lifetime, which due to their longevity make them very ecologically sound. Only the one board made, only shipped out the once, ....
I hope this answers your question.
P.S. What do you currently surf?
