Boat building in Italy

Hi everyone,

I've been a stitch&glue boat builder since 2007. I have plans to move to Italy and before choosing the region and city I'm looking for information that can help me on the decision. For now my options for a place would be Puglia or near Lago di Garda.

If there are Italians here on the forum, or anyone who knows Italian builders, I would appreciate it if you could put me in touch.

I would like to know more about:
- Is it required some italian license to sail small boats ?
- Is it easy to find material for stitch&glue construction ?
- If I live in a rented apartment, any suggestions on how to find a place to build and store the boat ?

Best regards,
Hugo Lavalle

Re: Boat building in Italy

Hi! I’ve been following your post and your move sounds exciting. While I’m not an Italian expert, I can share some insights. For sailing small boats in Italy, there are usually local registration requirements and sometimes a license depending on engine size and boat length, so it’s worth checking with the local maritime authorities in the region you choose. Finding materials for stitch & glue construction should be possible, especially near larger towns or boating hubs, but prices and availability might vary between Puglia and Lago di Garda. If you’re living in a rented apartment, many builders rent small workshops, shared maker spaces, or storage units near marinas, which can work well for boat building. Connecting with local boat clubs or online Italian boating forums can also help you find suppliers and workspace options.
