Petrel Play strip built.

Started my build a couple of months ago, just about ready for the glass/resin. Here a few pics of the hull build. More to follow8.jpgiP1010001.jpg2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg5.jpg

Re: Petrel Play strip built.

So I'm nearing the point where I enter the unknown. Not that I have ever built a strip built kayak before, but wood and glue are no strangers to me so have not felt like I don't what I'm doing....yet. So far its been a very satisfying process, measure, plane, plane a bit more, glue, staple and tape, wedge clamp etc. Following the great videos that Nick Schade has made whilst building, its hard to go wrong. https://guillemot-kayaks.com/strip-buil … trip-kayak.

I've not done everything 100% they way he did, apart from cutting each strip with a saw to get the taper which I found made I was only a few plane strokes away for a perfect taper I also did the keel/bottom slightly differently and s few tweaks on the deck. But the whole principle is just the same.

But from here on in it will get interesting. First step something a little out of the ordinary for the cockpit.

Hi P.  Looking good!  Cutting the cockpit hole and fitting it was rather stressful particularly with the feature line.  Looking forward to seeing futher pics of your progess.  Best. J

Re: Petrel Play strip built.

Hi J, well I gave myself a little more stress by doing a layer of carbon first. but it came out well, just need the final fit before starting the main glassing.31.jpg32.jpg33.jpg34.jpg

So the hull is glassed, I thought I'd add a bit more detail of the process so far. I wanted a light build so bought 50% Paulownia which is actually very nice to work with if a little bit softer than cedar. this allowed me to do a nice pattern on the deck but I did have to add a few bits on the hull as I was running out. As you can see the hull is very...... confused in colour but actually its grown on me and makes it look even more hand built (from lots of different trees)

I bought 50% of the Cedar with no bead and cove and actually much preferred using this on the bottom of the hull to the bead and cove so for the deck I cut all the strips back. I think this made the job on the deck much easier, 15mm wide strips with 6mm wide accents in cedar. I am very happy with the deck, better than I could have hoped. Lets see how it looks when its glassed.
