Painting epoxy

I'm nearing the end of building a Canadian Canoe (will post some photos in the build section soon).
A friend as offered to paint a design onto the hull for me. Before i get carried away with designs I wanted to check whether you can paint onto epoxy and what sort of paint is best to use. Would acryilic paint be ok or am i going to need to use more expensive marine enamel?

My thought at the moment is to have the design painted onto the top layer of epoxy and then to finish the whole hull with 2 or 3 coats of varnish.

What i really want to avoid is ending up with a design shaped hole in the hull on my first trip out!

Thanks
Matt
