Wherry - Installing gates for occasional fixed seat rowing

Anyone got experience of attaching pivoting gates (as used for sliding seat riggers) to gunwhales of a wherry, rather than conventional rowlocks?  Will need to be built up above gunwhales to give clearance of knees.  Anyone out there done this or similar?

I have heard of people using the Concept II type gates but on larger boats like the Northeaster Dory when it was set up for V2.  Most people who fit rowlocks will need to raise those up 22 to 38mm on risers to give sufficient knee clearance. 

What I would do is mock it up with a couple of different riser blocks so you can see how it all works at 22mm high and 38mm high before you make any changes.  This way you can fine-tune it before committing to anything.

Are you using sliding or fixed seats?

I epoxied blocks to the top inside edge of the hull to provide a mounting point for wooden riggers with C2 rowlocks.

Thanks Phil,
Spotted some photos of fixed seat Celtic longboats using pivoting gates with Concept blades.  Seem to have a plate bolted to gunwhale with a brace - have you come across anything like these - maybe Neaves supply them?? 

May well come back to you for some offcuts - need to experiment as suggested on fixed seat.

It looks like they could be rowing rather than sculling but the principle is the same.  The critical trilogy is getting the gate height set to the seat tops allowing the correct dip of the oar into the water.  It looks like the brace is attached to the plate on top of the gunwale.
